| twisty roads |

navigated some narrow twisty lanes, from Houndtor to Manaton past Bowermans Nose. where once there was a gate now is a cattle grid. then took self to Haytor Quarry, wandering along the cattle tracks through, through prickly gorse. the ponds in the quarry rather full, surprised that the large deep working, normally dry, was full of water. too many people around, came home with some gorse. getting to know mitzi cat, quite delightful to be around.

| Pumpkin, luffa gourd, tomatoes |

One of the issues with doing vegetarian dishes is how difficult it is to get a room excited about a mound of tofu as a turkey that comes right out of the oven. Part of it is the community issue, everyone hanging around the oven peeking in and checking on things, watching it brown, slowly building the anticipation. While a Vietnamese salad may be lovely, and tasty, it goes together quickly. When I heard about baking an entree inside a pumpkin I knew it was something I needed to think about more closely.
I had already made tiny pumpkin creme brulee and pumpkin panna cotta inside a pumpkin, and I've baked many pumpkins, but not yet an entree.
Gourmet magazine does a cheese fondue inside a baked pumpkin with layers of french bread and cheese. I wanted less cheese, more eggs and did Alton Brown's Cheese souffle recipe, but inside a pumpkin. It took about 1.5h, not 35m to bake. But it did the job, built anticipation, and was beautiful to bring to the table.
Honestly, the flavor was boring. The pumpkin was very good, as was the souffle, but if I do it again I'd want green chilis. Cumin. Do some more thinking.
The pumpkin was an orangey green with white blotches I got at the Mexican market. Very good.

-----
I also made a salad of luffa gourd, napa cabbage, fresh green chilis, cilantro, and pickled ginger. The dressing was EVOO, ponzu, rice vinegar, tarragon vinegar, damiana, star anise, and basil, and sugar. Really awesome.
-----------
I baked the last of the tomatoes with some white beans the other day, and it was pretty.

| Bury Me Alive |
[07 Nov 2009|09:16pm] |
A portrait of the band, We Are The Fallen.
The butterfly is a classic symbol of rebirth after death. I thought it was appropriate, considering that most of the band are former members of Evanescence.
We Are The Fallen Acrylic and Digital
All I see is black and cold As I try to pull you down To the ground, the ground
You bury me alive And everybody's got to breathe somehow Don't leave me, die Too consumed by your own emptiness and lies

met the family cat for the first time, a beautiful tortisehell, she has fascinating eyes, the iris pattern. she is also quite chatty, not in a purry way, but rather like charly from those old public information films. still young, so playful & nosey, happy to catch you with a claw. tomorrow shall be a walk up to haytor quarry, sit on my rock, play with the old crane windlass. that journey might enable me to find some gorse or some other wood.

My ears hurt and it's sort of difficult to breathe.
There is too much noise here today. I wanted to go lay in the yard but one side neighbor is getting a new roof and the other side is building a shed. So it's louder outside. But at least they are listening to p-funk.

gear_halo reminded me that I needed to tell everyone I know that the Northern Lights make noise.
I saw the Northern Lights over Greenland.

dear, dear. gavin & stacey, soon to be back on the idiot box. don't get it, tried to sit in front of it. appaling people with accents i can't listen to. bemused as to why it's seemingly popular. its been raining again, will rain tomorrow, next days. an evening where the shipping forecast will be the highlight, then i wouldn't want to be out somewhere on this night. did speak to two people on the phone briefly. a highlight of the hermetic self i have fashioned/enabled. then if out alone on the moor, or in the wood, no exitsential doubt, liberation is abroad.
have steel wool burrowing into skin!

My Scion is in the tire store, so I borrowed Mike's PT, since Mike is on vacation. "You don't want to do that." My co-worker said, "It's..gross." But I did anyway since Laurie didn't offer hers. I think Mike chain smokes cigars in his PT despite the company policy about no smoking in the company cars. I spent 45 minutes when I got home in the shower scrubbing my skin with anything good smelling I could find. My eyes and throat still burn.
-----
Me and Mark. "Dinner...John will eat chicken and broccoli and cheese.. I want pizza." "There's still pizza dough in the freezer." "I could do half veggie and half bacon.." "Or individual calzones." "Bingo. That's why I keep you around."
Calzones: Me: chicken, bbq sauce, frank's hot sauce, green chili goat cheese, cheddar, onions. Dipped in blue cheese dressing. John: chicken, queso fresco, broccoli. Uncle Mark: chicken, olive oil, sea salt, oregano, mizithra, black olives, green chilis, capers, onions.
